A shot… I mean SHORT history of Chartreuse.

*** Today’s daily does was brought to you by Cliff Clavin. ***

Did you know…Chartreuse is a color halfway between yellow and green that was named because of its resemblance to the green color of a French liqueur called green chartreuse? Our featured color’s namesake has been made by the Carthusian Monks since the 1740′s and is composed of distilled alcohol aged with 130 herbal extracts. One hundred and thirty extracts? That’s a lot.  The liqueur is named after the Monks’ Grande Chartreuse monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains in the general region of Grenoble in France and is produced in a factory in the nearby town of Voiron (Isère).

Now, let’s take a look at some spaces in which we can see “injected” shots of chartreuse (or variations thereof). Of course, we’re now talking about the hue, not the liqueur. Though I can’t really speak to what these people were drinking off camera. By the way, if you’ve ever tried the liqueur or the hue, we want to hear from you. Tell us about it in the comments section.

Watts up, dawg?

Don’t under-estimate or under-use the power of light therapy in your home decor. A comprehensive “design therapy” plan always includes a little light therapy. There are many elements to an effective lighting plan, but in this post/ideabook, I’m just going to focus on the table lamp.

Table lamps are a terrific way to easily and afford-ably add some wow and sophistication to your space. Whether you’re shopping for new table lamps or considering making over some lamps you already own, here are a few doses of darling lighting prescription’s we highly recommend.

The above is a piece I did a while back on Fox 7′s Good Day Austin, during which, I make over a few lamps using Frockz, spray paint and a little bit of creative juice. I hope this entry inspires you to pay attention to the lighting therapy in YOUR life. Do you have a great example of a lamp you love? Share it here or on our Facebook page!

Are you suffocating on your decor?

Keep it simple and remember the old saying, "Less is more."

Design Dilemma: During many of the house calls I make, I see that most homes I visit are filled with an abundance of decor, clutter, accessories and “visual noise”. This usually looks far from sophisticated and can detract from truly attractive features that are a part of the home. Do you sometimes get the feeling you’re being suffocated by your own growing mounds of decor and accessories? Here are a few tips to help you begin to create a space that looks clean, zen, chic, elegant, simplistic and artful.

Recommendations for simplifying your decor:

Subtract as much as you can, until you are left with only your favorite, most meaningful and beautiful decorative items. If you have hoarding tendencies, or have trouble parting with items, just create a “holding” area which is out of site. If you can live without those items for more than a month, then proceed to Step 2. If you have trouble letting go or knowing where to start, proceed to our website to schedule an in-home design therapy consultation.

Create a donate/recycle/garage sale pile and a trash pile. If you’re still finding it hard to part with some things, practice a little by giving an item or two to a friend, neighbor or organization who truly needs the item. Once you experience that feeling and realize it wasn’t the end of the world to get rid of a certain item, it will be easier to clear the rest of that clutter.

Living in a decluttered and organized space means creating new habits. Think twice before you make that next purchase. In fact, if you are out shopping and see an item you feel you can’t live without, I recommend you snap a photo of it on your smart phone, then come home and hold that photo up near the space where you plan on placing it so you can better visualize the item in your home. *Note: Proper execution of this professional design technique requires closing one eye and perhaps even sticking your tongue out just a bit or pursing your lips. To eliminate clutter, also create a new habit of donating or recycling 2 items for every item you bring in your home. This will help ensure you LOVE the item you’re bringing in, since you have to “pay” for it with two existing items you already own.

Remember, you came into this world with nothing, and you leave with nothing. Don’t become too attached to your things and suffocate on your own clutter while your here. There are more important things to do with your precious life!

Now, on to the story of the 3 freaky-funky trees…

Far from traditional, this funky & colorful tree grouping suits my style and personality!

It was the Christmas of 2005 when I began the journey of “switching teams”. I used to be a die-hard classic REAL tree gal. Then at some point, I took a turn for the the funky and we now have a colorful faux tree grouping (pictured left).

What could possibly trigger this freaky tree frenzy? Well, you see… one day, my mother (a.k.a. “Mother Interior“) was fondly recalling how my fashion forward and domestic diva of a Grandmother once flocked a tree in pink when my mother was young. (Circa 1950′s — DON’T do the math. Mother Interior is 49 and holding.) As you can imagine, in the 1950′s, pink tree flocking was a bit unique and TREE chic!

Sadly, my creative, sweet and beloved grandmother passed away in the Fall of 2002. Holidays without her are especially tough. I still miss her deeply, and frequently find her “speaking” to me in interesting ways. Ok, I’m not going to go all James Van Praagh here, it’s nothing weird like that. For those of you who have lost a loved one, I’m sure you can relate. Signs, memories and manifestations abound after you lose someone near and dear to your heart. Like many, I have a heightened awareness of things that remind me of her since she’s often on my mind, especially around the holidays and special occasions.

Each holiday season, I’m always looking for ways to include my grandmother in our Christmas experience and honor her memory. One chilly December afternoon, I was out doing a little holiday shopping, and I came across an artificial pink tree. Recalling the story of the flocked tree my mother had shared with me, I HAD to purchase it (and I’m sure much to our neighbor’s chagrin) display it proudly on our front porch.

Pictured above: My son helping to trim the tree(s) and picking out his next ornament to strategically place on his tree.

The next year, I decided to add a 2nd and 3rd tree to the grouping, and bring the mix inside, in lieu of the traditional and REAL evergreen we would usually display. I’m sure it doesn’t suit everyone’s taste, but these silly trees make me smile, and the pink one, of course, has special meaning to me. Not to mention, when we have guests over, our trees always spark up an interesting conversation. Bonus: It’s also fun for our kiddo, since he gets his own tree to decorate with his favorite ornaments, and the treasured ornaments he has made. Another fun holiday tradition in our house is that we collect an ornament from every vacation. Each year, as we sip on eggnog and decorate our tree, we recall fond memories of family vacations, favorite places and good times.

Ok, so now that I’ve shown you mine, YOU show me yours! Go to our Facebook Page, upload a photo of your tree or other holiday decor, then encourage your friends to vote by liking your photo. (Would be cool if they like our page, too, but that’s totally optional, and we only want peeps who truly like us to like us. Not fake likes. We gotta keep it real. Ya know what I mean? I mean, we gotta keep the “likes” real — the trees…well, not necessarily.)

Our trees lit up at night, and in our new home at "Cosmic Acres" nestled in the Texas Hill Country

By the way, I’m entering the contest too. My charity of choice this holiday season, as with the last… Austin Pets Alive, in honor of my Grandmother, who loved animals and her dear feline companion, “Willy”.

Peace, Love and Joy,

P.S. Seinfeld fans… I included the video below for your viewing pleasure. Remember, no made up charities!

Mother Interior’s Hints for a Better Box Cake

• Preheat your oven! I repeat… Preheat your oven!

• Sift the cake mix. Don’t skip this step, as sifting changes the texture of the cake.

• Eggs and all wet ingredients should be room temperature. Eggs need at least an hour
out of the refrigerator to become room temperature.

• Separate eggs and whip the whites. Then, add the yolks to the wet ingredients. After stirring the batter, fold in the whipped egg whites.

• For a chocolate cake, substitute oil with the same amount of sour cream or mayonnaise.

• For a basic yellow cake, use fruit juice instead of water.

• For a white wedding cake, substitute two egg whites for each whole egg.

• When using canned frosting… whip, whip, whip. This will change the taste and texture of the frosting and it will spread more easily.

• To enhance the frosting, add a touch of vanilla extract, liqueur or flavoring.

Keep a few boxes of cake mix and cans of frosting in the pantry. You can whip up a homemade tasting cake at a moment’s notice.

Do you really need to stage your home to sell it?

I always love the words of real estate wisdom  Barbara Corcoran has to share! The only thing I would share with Babs if I had the opportunity would be that the website she mentions doesn’t list ALL the stagers in the U.S. — there are many amazing and talented home stagers who aren’t members of that particular association but who are members of the Real Estate Staging Association and others (or none at all). As she says, I would definitely get referrals from a professional Realtor and then check out the home stagers portfolio to see examples of their work.)
