When purple & zebra reigns, in a bad way.

Q: At what point does purple and/or zebra print become too much?

A: Right here.

I actually first found this photo on a website called “AmazingDecoration.Net”.

Oh, this is amazing all right.

After seeing this photo, curiosity got the best of me, and though I was supposed to be working on our taxes, I found my head filled with all sorts of questions that needed answers. (Questions about this purple space — not my taxes — though I will probably soon have some questions about that, too.)

In a quest to satiate my intense desire to know more and understand the “why” around this space, I decided to do a little more research. It will probably come as no surprise that my search led me to an online forum dedicated just for Prince fans.  This photo was featured in a thread titled, “Is your living room purple?”

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m a Prince fan, but clearly, not as much of one as some of these folks. After cruising the forum for a bit, I found myself having many more questions than answers:

1). Who, if anyone, actually resides in this space?

2). Why do they have a random bow of holly haphazardly hanging from the window when they clearly spent so much time attending to the other “details” of the living room?

3.) Where did they get the brilliant idea to use the foam puzzle mats on the coffee table? (Clever. Now they don’t have to worry about their little oompa-loompas hitting their heads on the corner of that rad coffee table.)

I realize I may never get answers to any of the questions, but in an effort to postpone working on my taxes, I’ve compiled a short list of characters who may actually reside in this space:

Grape Ape

Grimace

Tinky Winky, the Purple and “Controversial” Teletubby.

Willy Wonka

The enigmatic Prince of purple, himself.

Marty from Madagascar

The entire cast of The Color Purple.

I think you forgot Barney? I think he could fit right in that room!

Shari — How did I forget Barney!?!! He would blend in perfectly with the bunch. :-)

I always appreciate the share of “design gone wrong” as a visual caution and learning tool?
It’s also a great opportunity to note “adjustments” that could right the sinking decor ship.
Color/pattern placement could go a long way in this space; currently it there are so many contrasts going on that there is no viual focus or flow. The space is viewed as bits and pieces not one space and so busy you can get dizzy.
    Any other suggestions?

I love your spin, Suz. As a positive, I could add that the furniture placement isn’t too far off. I don’t get the t.v. tray table next to the coffee table, other than that, aside from some tweaks with the clutter on the far wall, this is a good layout.

  3. I love this new blog category! After decorating our starter home with sprinkles of hand me downs and inexpensive items, I can honestly say…”well, at least it doesn’t look like that!”

Whew! I’m glad your starter home doesn’t look like that. You’ve also made a good point — we all have to start somewhere, and though we might not be working with our ideal design budget, our decor still doesn’t have to be cheesy!
